WHO WAS JULIO CÉSAR

Julius Caesar (in Latin: Caius or Gaius Iulius Caesar or IMP • C • IVLIVS • CÆSAR • DIVVS; July 13, 100 B.C. - March 15, 44 B.C.) was a Roman patrician, military leader and politician. He played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Much of the historiography of Caesar's military campaigns was written by himself or by contemporary sources, most of them, letters and speeches by Cicero and manuscripts by Salustio. His biography was later best written by the historians Suetonius and Plutarch. Caesar is considered by many scholars to be one of the greatest military commanders in history.

Born into a patrician family of little influence, César was climbing his place in Roman public life. In 60 B.C., he and politicians Crassus and Pompey formed an alliance (the First Triumvirate) that ended up dominating Roman politics for years. His attempts to remain in power through populist tactics faced resistance from the conservative aristocratic classes of the Roman Senate, led by men like Cato and Cicero. Caesar earned a good military reputation and money during the Gallic Wars (58-50 BC), expanding Roman domains north to the English Channel, annexing Gaul (present-day France), and east to the Rhine (within present-day Germany ). He also became the first Roman general to launch a military incursion into Britain.
