Who were The Beatles?
The Beatles was an English rock band formed in 1960 in the city of Liverpool. Formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, it is considered the most influential band of all time. The group was part of the development of the counterculture of the 1960s and the recognition of popular music as an art form. Rooted in the 1950s skiffle, beat and rock and roll, their sound incorporated elements of classical and traditional pop music in innovative ways; the band later explored musical styles ranging from ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock.
As pioneers in recording, composition and artistic presentation, the group revolutionized many aspects of the music industry and was often publicized as a leader of the youth and socio-cultural movements of the time.
Led by Lennon and McCartney, the band built their reputation playing in clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg for three years from 1960, initially with Stuart Sutcliffe playing bass. Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, together since 1958, went through a succession of drummers, including Pete Best, before asking Starr to join them in 1962.
