Orange Is the New Black (sometimes abbreviated as OITNB) is an American television series developed by Jenji Kohan, Sara Hess and Tara Herrmann for Netflix, starring Taylor Schilling. It is based on Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison (2010), a memory created by Piper Kerman, about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a federal minimum security prison.
The series was made official in the first half of 2013, with an order of 13 episodes for the first season, which was released on July 11, 2013. On February 5, 2016, Netflix renewed the series for a fifth, sixth and seventh season . On October 17, 2018, it was confirmed that the seventh season would be the last of the series and was released on July 26, 2019.
In Brazil, it is on the Netflix Brasil catalog and is also shown on closed TV by Comedy Central Brasil and on open TV by Band.
The series develops around the story of Piper Chapman, who lives in New York, and is sentenced to serve 15 months in a federal women's prison for having participated in the transport of a bag of money from drug trafficking when younger at the request of the his ex-girlfriend, Alex Vause, who is an important part of an international drug cartel.
