Who Was Morgan Freeman?

     Morgan Porterfield Freeman Jr. (Memphis, Tennessee, June 1, 1937) is an award-winning American actor, producer, narrator and film director. He is best known for his performances in Driving Miss Daisy, Glory, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Unforgiven, Se7en, Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty, Million Dollar Baby, Shawshank Redemption, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises and Invictus . He is currently the executive producer of the CBS drama Madam Secretary.

     Before embarking on the dramatic arts, Freeman thought of fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a pilot. From 1955 to 1969, shortly after graduating from Los Angeles Community College, he made it to the American Air Force - never, however, as a pilot, but as a mechanic. Only recently did he acquire a license to drive private airplanes.

     Freeman had a basically theatrical background, starting his career in the 1960s, in off-Broadway production Niggerlovers. In the same period, he managed to participate in the completely black version of Hello, Dolly! and amended a number of roles, both in major shows and in New York's alternative circuits. Early in his career, he was married to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, from whom he would divorce in 1979.
