Who Was Charlie Chaplin?

     Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE (England, April 16, 1889 - Corsier-sur-Vevey, December 25, 1977) was a British actor, director, composer, screenwriter, producer and publisher. Chaplin was one of the actors of the silent film era, notable for his use of mime and slapstick comedy. 

     He is well known for his films. The Immigrant, The Boy, In Search of Gold (he considered his best film), The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Highlights, A King in New York and the Countess of Hong Kong.

     Influenced by the work of his predecessors - French comedian Max Linder, Georges Méliès, DW Griffith Luís and Auguste Lumière - and sharing his work with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, he was influenced by mime, pantomime and the slapstick genre and influenced a huge team of comedians and filmmakers like Federico Fellini, The Three Stooges, Peter Sellers, Milton Berle, Marcel Marceau, Jacques Tati, Rowan Atkinson, Johnny Depp, Michael Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, Roberto Gomes Bolaños (the "Chaves") , Renato Aragão (the "Didi Mocó") and other directors and comedians. He is considered by some critics to be the greatest cinematographic artist of all time, and one of the "fathers of cinema", together with Brothers Lumière, Georges Méliès and D.W. 

     Griffith. Charlie Chaplin acted, directed, wrote, produced and financed his own films, being strongly influenced by a predecessor, the French comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films.
