Who Was Pythagoras?

     Pythagoras of Samos (570 - 495 BC) was a Greek Ionian philosopher and mathematician credited as the founder of the movement called Pythagoreanism. Most of the information about Pythagoras was written centuries after he lived, so there is little reliable information about him.

     Born on the Greek island of Samos, his mother would have called himself Pítais and his father Mnesarco, supposedly a merchant from the city of Tire, who besides Pythagoras would have had two or three other children. Pythagoras spent his childhood in Samos although he traveled extensively with his father; he was trained by the best teachers, some of them philosophers. He played the lyre, learned arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and poetry.
